ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the nature of conditionality, the issuers of morality, role-play methods, and reflective practice. It refers to some issues explored in the classroom, in particular how teaching methods, with particular emphasis on role play, have facilitated exploration of conditionality and allowed for reflection by students. The chapter also refers to the fictional character 'Colin', a middle-aged man who makes various claims for benefits and services. Students of health and social care have witnessed live and pre-recorded role plays as the lead character, played by myself, has acted out situations with practitioners from job centre staff to health service personnel, played by colleagues in the department. Issues of conditionality can be linked to issues of social justice in many diverse ways. Social policies are not simply responses to social problems or issues but they can certainly be, to some extent, viewed through such a lens.
