ABSTRACT

The girling of sport for development is most certainly underway. International development funding trends over the past five years indicate that the sector is accepting sport as a tool to achieve a variety of impacts related to health, economic vitality, gender, and social cohesion. The confluence of these trends has landed gender and sport development initiatives in a position to receive increased funding, attention and experience exponential growth. The mission of the international nongovernmental organization is to equip adolescent girls to exercise their rights through sport. The organization works primarily in developing countries, supporting implementers to build and grow sport programs that address the unique needs of adolescent girls including health and rights and achieving economic empowerment. This organization works to create shared value in the 'Girl Power through Sport' concept by aligning sectorial interests. The Girl Effect has catalyzed a dialogue that has resulted in funding prioritization for girls, has contributed to the opening of sport for development opportunities.
