ABSTRACT

One of the central goals of many Sports for Development (SFD) programs relates to the creation of social capital. As a concept, social capital was heavily influenced by Bourdieu, Coleman and Putnam. The chapter builds mainly upon Coleman's and Coalter's descriptions of social capital, have led to the operational definition of the concept that are using for research. The chapter suggests that: "Social capital refers to social networks based on strong ties between people with mutual relations, reciprocity and trust based on familiarity and closeness through which individuals or groups can obtain various types of advantage and resource". The empirical research on social capital in the context of the Blue Dragon Children's Foundation (BDCF), an international NGO based in Vietnam Hanoi, the various steps of the proposed Framework for Re-Engaged Youth as Change Agents (FREYCA), a process-oriented framework that provides a conceptual model showcasing the contribution of youth workers in the sustainable SFD projects.
