ABSTRACT

Ruth Jeanes and Ramón Spaaij discusses the two kinds of coach-educators: western-based volunteers have a special talent for a specific sport and volunteer for weeks or months; and native coach-educators may have participated in the program themselves. This response will focus on the native coach-educator who is exceptionally knowledgeable about local challenges, social systems, and the daily life of the participant. This term, which may vary by organization, will here include coaches, peer-educators, and play multiple roles however, regularly interact with participants. Positively, during the past decade significant attention was focused on the sport for development and peace (SDP) sector, resulting in international aid being funnelled into SDP organizations. As such, well-established organizations with strong infrastructure and secured funding are now at a pivotal juncture and capable of employing a critical pedagogy. To apply Paulo Freire's methods to SDP lessons in a formalized pedagogical sense, coach-educators will need to be trained in Freireian facilitation techniques of problem posing.
