ABSTRACT

The chapter surveys the extent to which development through sport has extended to a range of countries in South East and East Asia. Countries selected for a broad overview are within the 'Confucian Asian' arc of nation states considered to be influenced socially, economically and politically in some part by the close proximity of China. This chapter explains, the way that sport is used for development and peace across the countries reviewed is quite nuanced but is characterised as being much sparser and more limited when compared with, say, sub-Saharan Africa. The review includes SDP projects that have been developed with the assistance or at the behest of corporate partners (CSR). However, this chapter aims to provide a more balanced reflection so as not to be overtly biased in the analysis that takes place.
