ABSTRACT

With the increasing use of sport as a tool for development and peace by both sport and development organisations, there is a pressing need to ensure that the potential positive gains of sport for development programming are not undermined by the risks of harm or abuse. In 2012, a group of organisations working in sport, sport for development, child protection and international development, came together to explore how to make sport safer for children around the world. This work was supported by the findings of two research reports commissioned separately by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). Ultimately, the 'safeguards' are prescriptive, the implementation is essentially local, and aims to develop a guide to implementation which draws on the experience of a representative range of organisations, so that different readers can draw different, relevant examples of these safeguards are expressed in organisational practice at a local level.
