ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the relationship between globalization and popular music experiences. One of the main effects of globalization processes is the emergence of the specific types of identity and social relations that operate on supra-local and transnational levels. The chapter presents the specifics of the development of popular music in Poland from the perspective of the transition from socialism to capitalism and introduction of free market economy. It examines the role and importance of women in popular music in Poland in order to illustrate the paradoxes of globalization. The chapter discusses the Polish music genre of disco polo, which illustrate the transformation of a music genre influenced by the social, cultural and technological changes occurring on a global scale. The political transformation from socialism to democracy occurred almost 30 years ago, Polish culture is a platform for two opposing normative orders: traditional and postmodern.
