ABSTRACT

Oil is a hydrocarbon. It is densely packed energy in a convenient form that has a multitude of important uses. In its current volume, it is not replaceable by anything else. Oil is also the most important strategic resource in the world. The birth place of the modern oil industry is commonly considered to be Titusville, Pennsylvania. There Edwin Drake drilled his first modern oil well in 1859. Oil was also used as a lubricant for machinery in the growing industrial manufacturing sector. Uppsala Global Energy Systems (UGES) is a research group at Uppsala University in Sweden. The growth of developing economies is much more oil-intensive, compared with Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. The Joint Forces Command in the United States, which was discontinued in 2011, cast oil and energy in a major role in their 2010 Joint Operations Environment (JOE) report.
