ABSTRACT
Nearly all the recommendations concerning the structural reforms needed to ‘overcome the crisis’ that come from EU officials, when not explicitly mentioning the cutting down of social expenditure, are patent euphemisms for the same concept. The endless repetitions of the need to cut the welfare state down to size have become so insistent and pervasive that they have nearly reached the status of a self-evident truth about which no discussions or questions seem to be allowed.
