ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role and relevance of artists as social change agents within the context of international development. For over sixty years now, the field of international development has sought concepts and strategic frameworks that set a standard of comparison for the basic conditions for a fulfilled life. The existence of international agreements like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 1 suggests the ability of ‘humanity,’ despite its diversity, to find common ground in the design of social goals and the amelioration of social grievances. Such agreements, however, only fulfil their aim when they effect actual change in the concrete circumstances of people.
