ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on different ways of working, and starts with looking at different teaching approaches with which one might be familiar and have used in other curriculum areas, but not necessarily in mathematics. Role-play is an activity that most people immediately link to the early years. People think of small children in a role-play environment, and usually some kind of shop for mathematics teaching and learning. One of the most usual mathematical role-play environments that are created is a shop, with a focus on money. Choosing a game need not be a difficult issue. Adapting games that are played in other areas of the curriculum can be a good starting point. One approach to developing creative teaching and learning is to use ideas and formats from popular television programmes as the basis of activities in the classroom. The chapter explores writing about mathematics and what this means for creative learning and creative teaching of mathematics.
