ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the conceptual framework in relation to practices and approaches to learning in the context of a global society. It focuses at how young people perceive their relationship to the wider world, the concept of a global dimension in schools, the value of the concept of global skills, and initiatives in higher education. One of the challenges for global youth work has been the tension between education and campaigning, with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) particularly seeking to engage young people in taking action. The Development Education Association's (DEA) global youth work training manual aimed to address this through a series of model training activities that encouraged promotion of different voices and perspectives. The use of the term global can be an important lens through which to address a pedagogy of development education, but it can equally lead to distractions towards addressing global themes purely in terms of a competitive marketplace.
