ABSTRACT

This chapter explores alternative processes for city making within the framework of 'immediate and substantive actions' that serve as 'grounds for uncovering opportunity and unleashing potential' of the already existing city. Las Vegas, Nevada is typically identified via its global signifier, the lavishly flamboyant Las Vegas Boulevard, better known as 'the Las Vegas Strip' or to local residents and frequent visitors, 'the Strip'. Packalen's definition where 'culture is an anthropological and sociological concept, that is, it comprises that entire mean when talk about norms, values, assumptions, traditions, and practices'. In 2006, MGM Resorts International released its plans to develop Project CityCenter, a multi-billion-dollar casino-resort, luxury condominium, and shopping development located on the Las Vegas Strip. Las Vegas fashion, the ARIA resort, which is just one constituent piece of the Project CityCenter campus, is championed as 'The World's Largest Gold-Rated LEED Building', using the US Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.
