The flourishing of translation into Arabic during the Abbasid period (750-1258 AD) is one of the most important cultural events in Islamic history. Indeed, its contribution to the transmission of knowledge from Greece and Rome (and to a lesser extent from India and Persia) to the Muslim World makes it “a major event in the history of world civilization” (Montgomery 2002:89).
