ABSTRACT

Landscape characters in Turkey are quite different to those in European countries where ’Landscape Character Assessment’ (LCA) has been most used, and using it in Turkey brings new opportunities and challenges. This chapter explains how landscape has been interpreted and landscape evaluation has gradually been improved in Turkey and how northern European origin LCA method has been adapted in to Turkish landscapes. The examples show a range of different interpretations of LCA methodology which has been tested for more broadly eastern Mediterranean type of landscapes in the case of urban landscapes, protected landscapes, cultural landscapes, roadside corridors, tea plantations, tourism and recreation, quality objectives, landscape toponymies.
