ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on how landscape has been integrated into Portuguese spatial planning policy and practice, and on how Landscape Character Assessment has become in this context pivotal in disseminating the landscape concepts amongst planning practitioners. With this purpose in mind the ways in which LCA has been used in planning exercises at different scales are presented. The insights gained on the potential and drawbacks of characterisation approaches at each scale identify further methodological developments that would enable LCA to become a more fully operational tool for integrating multiple perspectives and knowledge bases into the planning of future landscapes.
