ABSTRACT
The aim of this chapter is to examine the role of ethics in prisoner research drawing on the authors’ own experience of conducting research in prison. The chapter will begin by historically contextualising the role of ethics, and examining the troubling historical context within which ethical codes and regulatory mechanisms emerged, the role of ethical governance and the ethical dilemmas that as prison researchers we have encountered.
