ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2 we discussed the qualities that make for a strong collaborative team and the process of developing the team. In this chapter, we focus on collaboration in the context of individual projects, including why designers team and how they work once they form their teams. In contemporary practice, designers may have a stable of partners with whom they collaborate. For example, some architects routinely work with the same consultants, such as structural engineers or landscape architects, throughout their careers. This familiarity can be a shortcut that helps the team to push their design work. Designers can also pursue variety in their collaborations, looking to ever expand their skill set, geographic reach, and opportunities.
