ABSTRACT

Drugs have played and continue to play an integral role in modern sport. The aim of this chapter is to establish a two-dimensional framework that enables a more precise discussion of the role of drugs in sport. The first dimension offers a typology to categorise drugs. The second dimension contrasts drug use with misuse and abuse. The implications of this model for drug control-led integrity management in sport are then developed. The discussion is focused on a general understanding of what drugs are and how they are consumed. It is intended to develop the arguments around how drugs are consumed in sport relative to management rather than give a detailed medical or pharmacological account. Readers interested in such medical accounts may find the latest edition of Mottram and Chester’s (2015) Drugs in Sport a valuable introduction.
