ABSTRACT

The author examines the role of the German film industry in the years of German conquest and occupation of Europe. It was only to be expected that Goebbels would attempt to direct the output of the German film industry so that its films would contain an optimum of Nazi propaganda, and that he would attempt to exhibit these films as widely as possible in occupied and neutral Europe. Before considering Goebbels' attempts to extend his 'film revolution' abroad it is necessary briefly to sketch the 'revolution' inside Germany. The New Order was Hitler's attempt to extend the National Socialist Revolution beyond the borders of Germany. If the New Order was merely an empty phrase to cover the traditional short term exploitation of occupied territories it follows that efforts by the various Nazi agencies responsible for implementing the European 'cultural revolution' were merely propaganda aimed at reconciling the peoples of Western Europe to German political hegemony.
