ABSTRACT

I The New Order was Hitler’s attempt to extend the National Socialist Revolution beyond the borders of Germany. Announced in 1940, when German military prestige was nearing its height, it proposed the reorgan isation of the European economy with the aim of creating a selfsufficient, large scale, economic union (Grossraumwirtschaft) quaran tined from the more materialistic systems of the rest of the world, especially the United States. This, however, was only a means to an end.1 Within this area a programme would be introduced to restore the racial (volkisch) consciousness of the Nordic peoples by the removal of destructive elements and the restoration of a genuine Kultur. Put another way, for the last two hundred years liberalism and capitalism had been tending to develop a certain type of man. The National Socialist Revolution sought to change the course of European History by creating a new type of man.2
