ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the integration of micro- and meso-level policy factors is useful in offering an understanding of the ways micro- and meso-level of analyses interrelate in the development of young talents and the inhibiting or stimulating factors in achieving success. Well-considered micro-level factors provide a fertile ground for elite sport policies at the meso-level to be effective. During the sports participation, sport clubs are important stakeholders in sport development because research confirmed that most elite level athletes, first receives an extra attention from their national governing body only at the age of 17 years. The chapter explores how a compilation of both literature fields can improve a theoretical understanding of the systems that support the athletic career. Over the past three decades, as the belief that elite sport success can be influenced by investing strategically has grown stronger, an emerging body of literature has paid attention to the meso-level factors that lead to international sporting success.
