ABSTRACT

Assessment is a crucial conversation in education today. Many wonder how educators are supposed to differentiate lessons yet standardize assessments. Performance-based assessments can be utilized to capture a more accurate picture of a student's true academic proficiency. The three-tiered approach to performance-based assessments provides a multi-modal view of a student's abilities to not only perform a task using the skills one assessing, but also his or her ability to communicate understanding both written and verbally. Students create a comparative picture using attribute blocks and label the picture for fractional parts of the wholes. Students demonstrate an understanding that fractions are related to each other in terms of size and numerical ordering. Students use Web 2.0 tools such as GoAnimate, Voki, and Xtranormal and Zooburst to create animated videos, speaking avatars, and 3D animated movies to demonstrate learning.
