ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the impacts of civil society organization (CSO) engagement. These impacts include: enthusiasm and awareness; improving and expanding debate; and supporting weaker states. The review of the participation of CSOs in the reformed Committee serves to elucidate some of the key boundary issues: issues that challenge and can transform the status quo. The participation of CSOs has served to expand debate, introduce new perspectives and therefore shift the direction of global food security policy. The chapter reviews successful engagement strategies employed by CSOs, and focuses on the implications of the Committee on World Food Security's (CFS's) experiences for global food security governance and global governance. The reformed CFS is the most legitimate and appropriate body to lead efforts towards improved global cohesion and best practices in food security policy. The chapter concludes with a discussion of opportunities for future research.
