ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is intended for beginning primary teachers, whether trainees or newly qualified teachers, although it also be useful for trainee secondary teachers. It considers the debates around education what is its purpose, who decides what is taught in schools, the different types of education. It also looks at issues around curriculum. The book is concerned with inequality in education, this is still an important issue in the twenty-first century, and we know that growing up in social disadvantage can affect educational outcomes and future life chances. It looks at the debates and policy around special educational needs and inclusion, particularly the issues around whether children with special educational needs should attend mainstream schools. The book considers motivation in the context of children and their learning. There are appendices containing some reference information, including useful acronyms and a timeline of key events and legislation.
