ABSTRACT

The participants suffer not only from narcissistic personality disorders, but they also show symptoms of the so-called borderline personality organization, i.e. symptoms of the borderline syndrome. They are regressed to the oral stage of drive organization, are unable to deal with their emotions in a constructive manner and from the beginning project unintegrated, split-off, destructive forces on to the group. In retrospect one can see that notwithstanding its great destructive potential, little by little the group did succeed in unburdening itself of these negative forces. By realizing that it could not destroy the conductor, the group experienced something indestructible, something that seemingly is capable of withstanding all attacks and destruction. The result was a more stabilized identity. The ego was now strong enough to separate itself from a restrictive, oppressive and destructive object and so become free.
