ABSTRACT

It might be thought, if you’re considering living in this manner: what about holidays? With so little income and so little time because of being tied to the land, holidays can easily be missed. This is true of all land-based activities, but it’s always possible to get friends to come and take over for a few days while you get away. Dan and Sarah and family have a sailing boat moored on the coast of the Bristol Channel. Dan says they go sailing ‘for a low-carbon holiday. We camped aboard our boat, so no camp fees. We used less than a litre of petrol for the motor and took a load of home-grown food with us from the farm which we cooked on driftwood with freshly caught fish and scallops. Thanks to a mix of great friends and neighbours the farm was still in one piece when we got back!’
