ABSTRACT

One-planet-type developments can be found all over the world, but the planning laws which permit them vary from nation to nation, largely dependent upon how precious or pressured is the demand for land. In areas where land is freely available, there is much greater tolerance towards people doing their own thing, in great contrast to countries like the UK. I’m thinking, for example, of northeastern Germany, an area quite depopulated since reunification. Although much of the landscape is taken up by remotely controlled farming conglomerates, pockets exist where it is relatively cheap to acquire land and create a smallholding with low-impact dwelling. The same is true over large areas of Europe, particularly in the east.
