The importance attached by Bourdieu (1977) to the tempo of exchanges and to the opportunities that these provide for strategies of challenge and riposte was mentioned in the Introduction. Similarly, Lyotard (1984) has drawn attention to the spatiotemporal dynamics of repositioning in a communicative situation:

Each language partner, when a 'move' pertaining to him is made, undergoes a 'displacement', an alteration of some kind that not only affects him in his capacity as addressee and referent, but also as sender. These 'moves' necessarily provoke 'countermoves'.
