ABSTRACT

The military student will find an accurate account of the battle of Suvla in the official history compiled long after the event from a close examination of all the accumulated evidence and checked by all the principal officers concerned. Anzac could not accommodate the whole of the great army which was to be hurled on the Turkish line of communications, a fresh landing had to be made, and it was decided therefore to disembark part of the force at Suvla Bay. The original intention had been to commence the action a day or two before the main Anzac attack by a strong offensive at the Cape Helles end, the object being to draw the Turkish reserves to this end of the Peninsula. At dawn on August 7th, when the first part of the 10th Division arrived, the 11th Division was only holding Nibrunesi Point, the beach of Suvla Bay, and the crest of the Suvla Ridge.
