ABSTRACT

What do the activities listed in the title of this chapter have in common? A layman might say that they are all activities that can be indulged in to excess. A Freudian might note that they are all libidinal and involve some orality. From my own theoretical perspective, they are all sources of sensory stimulation and arousal. The definition of sensation seeking as the need for variety in sensation and experience leads to the prediction that the sensation seeker will engage in more varied forms of these activities and, where the expressions are limited, will be more likely to engage in these activities to a greater extent. The sensation seeker will also prefer the types of activities that provide greater, rather than those which provide less, stimulation or arousal.
