ABSTRACT

Across the globe countries are developing their renewable energy plans for several reasons: to reduce carbon emissions, to lower the use of fossil fuels, and to provide more reliance and security. This chapter focuses on the several direct regulatory support mechanisms in place for deployment of renewable energy in the European Union and South America. For price-driven policies, the price of energy is fixed by the government and the quantity is then set by the market, while for quantity-driven policies the quantity is imposed by the policy and the market then sets a price. The European Commission (EU) has set for each member state a national target for renewable energy and one for energy efficiency. The regulatory approach to renewables in the EU is very closely connected to the Union’s goals related to combating climate change and promoting sustainability.
