ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Agne's Science lesson illustrates her awareness of different pedagogical approaches but also her struggle to use these effectively. At her school there is little exposure to teaching that deviates from the norm of copying chunks of text from the single textbook onto the board and asking the pupils to copy it into their books. The chapter describes lessons where the only resources used are the blackboard and the pupil's exercise books. Agnes tells that she is going to teach a Science lesson on mineral resources using practical exercises. The three teachers have organized the class into eight groups of 10-15 children and given each group a letter (A-H). Agnes tells Raif to go to each group and 'tell them what they are'. He moves round the compound giving each group a name: 'gold', 'tin', etc. in Hausa. She says that Science is not like other subjects, it needs visuals and activities like this one.
