Re-writing the screen

Through this book, I have considered gender as a transitional space, as symptom and as defense against transitionality. These considerations situate gender as a phantasy object that mediates between the drives and social reality, that is, as a construction that links, through phantasy, subject and object. The fiction of coherence that gender provides us with constitutes a source of certainty that defends against the traumatic real of sexuality. While our gender identity helps structure our desire, it also attempts to pin down the polymorphous nature of the drive.
