ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the changing relative positions of languages and language varieties at different scales. This group of Chinese immigrants are exposed to multiple and sometimes competing cultures, values, ideologies, languages, and voices their voices are made at a global scale, which not only brings changes to the overseas Chinese communities but also has an impact on the rapidly changing Chinese society. One of the most remarkable features is the high global mobility of the young Chinese emigrants an outcome of this mobility is the voice articulated, negotiated, and ratified in frequent cross-continental movements. It is an enregistered voice of Canadian youth expressing positive attitudes such as approval and admiration, presented in her discourse and represented in CF's discourse. For the immigrant family, Dutch is a language for public life, and with the language at disposal, they can start making their voice heard in the host society.
