1 St. Louis, MO: Botanical Heights
Pages 16

In St. Louis, Botanical Heights is the new name for a neighborhood formerly called McRee Town (informally referred to as McRee).1 Located just southwest of St. Louis’ central core, McRee was an early streetcar suburb that grew together with the city’s industrial economy in the early 1900s. Like many other urban neighborhoods in the United States, however, McRee suffered the mid-20th century effects of demolition and isolation through highway building as “urban renewal.” McRee’s population declined over the second half of the century, caught in a predictable but persistent cycle of abandonment, disinvestment and crime.
