chapter  4
3 Houston, TX: Buffalo Bayou
Pages 16

Houston is a booming port city in Harris County, south Texas, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) inland from the Galveston Bay off the Gulf of Mexico. The city experienced significant growth during the periods of oil industry development throughout the 1900s, and its landscape is characterized by extensive transportation and infrastructure networks that grew in tandem with this economy. The physical experience driving in Houston en - com passes sublime spatial conditions where industry sometimes mixes into neighbor - hoods, and weaving highway and ramp interchanges are followed by dramatic moments in the shadows of towering all-glass skyscrapers downtown. Wide, cavernous streets are a part of urban life in Houston, and the infrastructure supporting this auto-based city defines the quality of urban space here as much as the buildings and blocks do.
