Online advertising is a complicated business that entails its own house of mirrors. Information is entered, bounced, highlighted and shaded, and rendered, and it is done in real time, in the background, where the human user is usually totally unaware that he or she is being digitally targeted. The server companies in turn supply ads from advertisers with which they have a contract to place the advertiser's ads on as many web-sites as possible.
