ABSTRACT

Ackerman Elementary School is located in an urban neighborhood in a large Midwestern city and is part of a large urban school district. As novice consultants took place at Ackerman Elementary School working with two fifth-grade teachers, Ms. Miley and Ms. Smith. Both teachers shared concerns about relational aggression between female students in their classrooms. This included behaviors such as spreading rumors or lies, intentionally excluding peers, threatening to withdraw friendships, and stealing friends. This consultation was an excellent learning experience as novice consultants. Issues of diversity played a major role in this consultation case it involved the classroom-wide intervention. Students in both classes did not fully buy into the idea of the intervention. The intervention rewarded students for giving compliments to their peers as a way of targeting relational aggression. Originally, Ms. Smith wanted to focus her intervention on an individual student who had a variety of both behavioral and academic concerns.
