ABSTRACT
In ‘The authentic teacher and the future’ (1984), the final chapter in the previous section, Heathcote’s increasing concerns about the ways in which schools disenfranchise young people and deny them any means of being effective in the world outside school is already apparent. Heathcote sees school as a sterile waiting area, where students are isolated from all matters of importance in life. Instead she wants young people to reach out to the community and to begin to take responsibility for their own learning. Her proposals for ways in which real links might be created between the school and the community clearly anticipate the development of Mantle of the Expert, her most innovative and influential approach to teaching and learning.
