ABSTRACT

An accelerated pace of consumption with an abundance of goods and services to choose from as well as an increased significance of symbolic consumption have characterized recent decades (e.g. Ekström 2013). This is particularly noticeable for consumption of clothing. Fast fashion and low prices have, during the last decades, contributed to a significant increase in consumption in several countries. In Great Britain, the volume of sold clothing increased by 60 per cent between 1995 and 2005 (Morley et al. 2006). In Sweden, private consumption of clothing and shoes increased by 53 per cent between 1999 and 2009 (Roos 2010).
