ABSTRACT

In Chapter 9, I begin explaining the components of my WISE formula, starting with the promotion of women in sport (W). I argue that without the promotion of women in sport, a country cannot excel at the Olympics. I give examples of China, which has one of the highest female participation rates among all countries in the world, in contrast with the percentage of female athletes from Islamic countries like Brunei, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. I conclude that given the new trend of mixed-gender events at the Olympics, the disadvantage for countries that do not promote women in sport might further increase.
