ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2, the term success is discussed as it relates to the Olympic Games. I address different ways of counting medals, such as the AP and IOC methods, the New York Times points based method, medals per capita, and medals by GDP. I also present alternative suggestions such as the market share model, looking at the costs of Olympic medals, or non-medal based measures of performance. Finally, I discuss weaknesses of the medal rankings, and I highlight in my conclusion that while the Olympic Games have become more inclusive, the majority of medals are still concentrated among only a few countries.
