ABSTRACT
Although Interaction Analysis (IA) and Knowledge Analysis (KA) differ in important respects, they nonetheless face a common nexus of questions relating to theory and method. Researchers in both traditions must, for example, select instances of human behavior for study. In this regard, we can ask: Is it necessary to observe behavior only in naturally occurring contexts? Similarly, both sets of researchers must make decisions about what is attended to in the observations that are collected, and with what precision. Here, for example, we might ask: Under what conditions is it important that we give careful attention to minute detail in gesture?
