ABSTRACT

Imperialism is the product of the competition between capital exporters of different nations for exclusive control of developing regions beyond their own borders. Wilshire identified the 'taproot' of contemporary imperialism as the need of investors to secure outlets for accumulated capital. The 'Republican Party, which is the political expression of the organized wealth of the country' favors a policy of imperialism in order to secure outlets for this surplus capital in foreign countries. Imperialism and warfare between the great powers can provide temporary relief for the problems of the capitalist system. The age of imperialism began about 1895, when the capitalist system had penetrated nearly every corner of the globe. The struggle to gain exclusive control of 'what still remained open of the non-capitalist environment' increased international tensions. Imperialism, which is the current expression of capitalism's drive to expand, is actually damaging to many capitalist interests. Imperialism backed by 'Finance capital' represents the final stage in the development of capitalism.
