ABSTRACT

This chapter describes factors that can facilitate civic participation for young people from ethnic minorities, where concerning online civic participation, one cannot claim that it is a guaranteed method for supporting ethnic minority youth in their involvement in society. It describes that the Czech Republic represents an interesting field for researching the civic participation of minorities due to its ethnic homogeneity and the relative novelty of the phenomenon of immigration. In the second half of the twentieth century, the Czech Republic was characterized by considerable ethnic and cultural homogeneity. The chapter describes two factors that can help young people from ethnic minorities facilitate their civic participation, on the basis of findings from the Czech Republic: social environment and Internet. The Internet may represent a safe environment for many of them where they can express their opinions about issues related to their ethnic minority and wider society.
