ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the findings from Portugal regarding participation among youth, women and migrants. It presents some of the findings from the focus groups and from the survey. Then, using data from the survey, patterns of civic and political participation among young people are reported, considering age, gender, books at home and immigrant background. Data were collected under the Processes Influencing Democratic Ownership and Participation, PIDOP Project and the results reported are drawn from two phases of the project. Based on the qualitative study, the chapter elaborates the survey to explore forms of participation and political attitudes among young people. Most of the research focused on European migrants highlights factors such as the labour market and the demographic effects of migration and rarely find gender sufficiently explored. These gaps in the literature about young people's participation have promoted theories of participation that are generalised to all groups, but are tested and developed almost exclusively from majority populations.
