ABSTRACT
The interview schedule was used to interview individuals who had been identified as influential others by the focus group participants. The schedule was initially drawn up in the English language. Key technical terms were translated into other languages using appropriate back-translation procedures to ensure the cross-linguistic equivalence of the meanings of these terms, but the entire schedule was not translated using strict back-translation because the interviews were only semi-structured and the wordings needed to be those that were clearest and most conversationally appropriate in the local language. The schedule consisted of five sections which targeted different aspects of the interviewees’ views. Environmental and human rights issues were explicitly mentioned in some of the questions in order to provide a concrete focus for the interviewees’ responses. Questions were omitted when the interviewee had already provided required information, and interviewers elicited additional information by asking appropriate follow-up questions according to the interviewees’ responses.
