ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Sandra Buechler's situation as the supervisor of binge eating treatment, including the issues: the power of shame, the avoidance of shame, the contagion of shame, and the effect of being terrified of shame. It argues that Ellen is hooked on absenting herself from feeling shame, and this dislocates her from her eating, her body, and other aspects of her experience. Buechler concern in the chapter is not solely to argue for the theory about Ellen's psychological functioning. This work is based on Buechler's own understanding of empathic processes. The chapter mentions the similarities but emphasize how Buechler think this work differs from his usual supervisory experience. It would say that Ellen's body is unusually present for him, and his feelings about it are unusually vivid, sometimes rendering him acutely conscious of the three bodies of the patient, analyst, and supervisor.
