ABSTRACT
René Descartes rmly believed in the reality and importance of human free will, but his remarks about it were not systematic. Consequently, it can be dif cult to understand what exactly he thinks freedom is . This chapter will attempt to make some headway on that question, explaining rst why freedom matters for Descartes, then how he understands its nature, and nally, what this view implies for his physics and theology.
